Born on March 1, 1942, in Abington, Pennsylvania, Jim was always creating excitement in everything he did. He was known for his quick wit, wisdom, curiosity, and kind heart.
Jim earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University and carried a lifelong fascination with “how things work.” He enjoyed a robust career beginning with being part of an elite team responsible for bringing the color television coverage to earth from Apollo 11 showing the first man-on-the-moon. He then became president of a company that invented the digital watch which they brought to the market partnered with Pulsar. Later he oversaw numerous defense programs for large defense contractors, designing and manufacturing defense electronics, mostly on military aircraft. Jim loved classic cars and closely followed automotive technological advances from the 1950’s to modern times. His last vehicle was a Tesla, as he was fascinated with the technology. Jim found a passion for boating in his 30’s and owned several power and sailboats over the years and shared this love with his children and family. Sunset was his favorite time of day.
He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 33 years, Lorna Jean Short, and his five children, Kristina Short Russell, Suzanne Short Lancaster, Joanna Nicol Pennartz, Taylor Leigh Field, Adam Carswell Short, and siblings William Short III, Sandra Stanton and Geraldine Gray.
He leaves behind memories of adventure and excitement, “wild hairs” he called them, and a strong family foundation. Jim will be missed, but his legacy will live on in the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life will be held by on May 31, 2025 at 3pm in the afternoon with reception immediately following at Palm Harbor United Methodist Church, 1551 Belcher Road, Palm Harbor, FL 34683.
