Hubert William ”Bill” Bates December 30, 1943 - June 2, 2026, 82, of Wesley Chapel, FL, went to be with his Lord and Savior, surrounded by family and close friends. Bill was born in Elberton, GA, and moved with his family at the age of two to Tampa, FL, where he spent most of his life. He graduated from Chamberlain High School and served four years in the Marine Corps, most notably on the Honor Guard in Washington, D.C. There, he not only shook the hands of multiple U.S. Presidents, but also participated in John F. Kennedy’s somber funeral ceremonies. Upon transitioning to civilian life, he began his career with United Parcel Service as one of the first nine drivers in Tampa, continuing there until retiring as a Loss Prevention Manager in 1995. Bill’s passions in life were his family, friends and fishing. His early retirement allowed him to enjoy all of those to the fullest for many years. His legacy was one of love, generosity, and wisdom, not only to his own family, but to strangers as well. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rebecca Bates. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda Bates; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Vicki Bates of San Antonio, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Davida and Rob Phillips of Troutman, NC; grandchildren, Alec Bates and wife, Kaelyn, of Galveston, TX; Tanner Bates and Logan Bates, both of San Antonio, TX; sister Barbara Johnson of Brandon, FL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
