Halvor Peter Gunderson

Born in 1947 and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Peter was the son of Harvey and Leonora Gunderson. He built a life defined by humble service, steady integrity, deep generosity, and complete devotion to his family. As a husband, father, grandfather, military officer, volunteer, and friend—he led with quiet strength and unwavering character.

Peter shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Kathy Gunderson. Together they built a family that became his greatest joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his children, Erik Gunderson and his wife, Denise; Matt Gunderson and his wife, Sophia; and Kate Burnard and her husband, Bill. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Noah, Jonah, Sarah, Micah, Joshua, Gigi, and Finn; his great-granddaughter, Grace; his beloved nieces and nephews, Becky, Shelly, Ricky, Rachel, Ronnie, Wendy, Peter, Meagan, Katie, and Madeline; and Maggie, he and Kathy's sweet and much-loved and doted-upon Goldendoodle that always made him smile. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Leonora Gunderson, and his siblings, Henry and Madeline.

A graduate of the University of Toledo, Peter focused his professional career on the food logistics industry, where his meticulous attention to detail earned the respect of colleagues and his employers.

His dedication to service extended far beyond his career. Peter proudly served two years on active duty in the United States Navy before continuing his military service as a Navy Reservist for 24 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. He was committed to serving others throughout his life, volunteering with Pinellas County Parks as a camp host, serving as Board Chair of the Dayton, Ohio Foodbank, giving back as a member of Rotary International in support of local literacy initiatives, and leading as President of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).

Peter found happiness on the water (especially saltwater) and in the outdoors. He loved fishing, boating, camping, and traveling. His love of nature and the outdoors was one of the greatest gifts he gave his children. An avid reader with an immense vocabulary, he remained endlessly curious throughout his life, with a passion for archaeology, history, and the environment. He also had a creative spirit, crafting unique carvings and works of art from found objects, often seeing transcendent beauty and possibility in ordinary things. Whether keeping busy doing projects around the house or planning the next adventure with Kathy, creating something with his hands, or simply spending time with those he loved, Peter was happiest when he was with family.

A faithful member of St. Paul's Parish in St. Petersburg, Peter lived a life rooted in faith, humility, and service. He led by example more so than with words. His attentiveness, steady nature, and witty sense of humor brought confidence, comfort, and countless smiles to those around him. He will be remembered for the love he gave so freely and his ongoing example of honor, kindness, curiosity, and service. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the lives he touched, and the many lasting positive memories he created. His memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
