James Douglas Behney, known as Doug, passed away in his sleep on December 26th, 2024, at his home in Tampa, Florida. Doug was born on December 1st, 1950, to Clyde and Gladys (Host) Behney in Lykens, Pennsylvania.
Doug, along with his brothers, was raised in Pennsylvania by his mother Gladys and his stepfather Bob Williams. His father Clyde was killed in action in the Korean War in 1952. Although Doug never knew his father, he would remember him and honor his sacrifice often.
Those who knew Doug will remember his unwavering devotion to his family and friends. He would do anything to help those he cared about, often putting their needs before his own. Despite the setbacks he faced in life, including debilitating heart problems, Doug never complained. His humor and quick wit could brighten even the darkest days, and his ability to laugh through life’s challenges was an inspiration to those around him.
Doug worked as a program manager in the technology industry. He lived and worked in many places over the course of his career, including Pennsylvania, Illinois, Utah, New Jersey, and Florida. He married Rose Behney in Philadelphia in October 1980, and together they raised three wonderful children - Amanda, Courtney, and Brett, later divorced. Doug was a loving and proud father, deeply involved in his children’s lives. Whether coaching sports teams, cheering from the sidelines, or simply sharing his love of golf and Philadelphia sports, Doug cherished the moments spent with his kids. His support, wisdom, and sense of humor left a lasting impression that will continue to guide them.
Doug was a passionate sports fan, devoted to the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers. Raising his family in the Chicagoland area also made him a loyal supporter of the Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks—a blessing and a curse for many. His love for golf, sports, and good company filled his life with joy.
Doug’s legacy lives on through his children, who carry his sense of humor, resilience, and love for life.
Doug is survived by his daughter Amanda (Dirk) Watrous, his son Brett, his granddaughter Willow, his brothers Clyde Behney, David Williams, Bobby Williams, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his beloved cat Cinnamon.
Doug is preceded in death by his daughter Courtney, his father Clyde Behney, his mother Gladys Williams, his stepfather Bob Williams, and his nephew Robert Williams.
A memorial service will be held in Salt Lake City at a later date so that Doug can be interred near his late daughter Courtney.
