David Alan Matway

Born in Tampa, Florida, David never took life too seriously. If you knew him, chances are you heard one of his famously corny jokes followed by his contagious laugh. He had a way of lifting every room he entered, making people laugh, feel at ease, and enjoy the moment.

More than anything, David was dependable. He showed his love by showing up—and usually showing up early. Whether it was a family gathering or one of his grandchildren’s shows, games, or milestones, Papa was there. He also had a special talent for finding just the right gift for each grandchild at Christmas and birthdays, always putting thought into what would make them smile.

David loved Rays baseball, a good steak-and-potato dinner, a family round of bowling, and any opportunity to spend time with his children and grandchildren.

He spent much of his career in the marine industry, serving as General Manager of Home Port Marina and later Pitman Yacht Services before retiring in 2023.

David is survived by his daughter, Lindsay Matway, and son-in-law, William Hodges; his son, Derek Matway, and daughter-in-law, Ashley Matway; his grandchildren, London, Noah, Madilyn, Logan, and Liam; and his sisters, Melanie Matway, Sherry Wetherington, Lori Matway, and Lisa Tucker.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Matway Jr., and his parents, Ann and Alex Matway.

His family will miss his humor, stories, contagious laugh, and the steady presence he brought to their lives.

Perhaps the simplest way to describe David is this: he was someone you could always count on to show up.
