David P. Hoult, a wonderful husband, stepfather, professor, and nature enthusiast, passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2025 in St. Petersburg, FL. He was born on August 30, 1935 in Ventura County, CA to Howard and Louise Hoult. David’s life was defined by his dedication to knowledge, his love of the natural world, and the joy he found in sharing his life with his family and those he loved.
David was a distinguished professor and researcher of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he mentored and inspired students throughout his career. He contributed to the academic community with his extensive expertise and research. A lifelong love of learning, David earned a Bachelor of Science degree from MIT, followed by a Master’s, Ph.D., and Postdoctoral studies at California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
David was a gentle soul, and a person of few words. When asked a thought-provoking question, he would pause, reflect, and then offer a clear, concise, and insightful response. He loved to teach and solve scientific world problems. Those who knew him remember him as a kind, quiet man, with a great smile and glowing cheeks who always looked much younger than his years. His family affectionally called him our “absent minded professor.” He had a unique way of making people feel heard and valued, and his presence was always a source of calm and reassurance.
An avid lover of the water, David found solace and peace in it. He was particularly proud of his boat, which he named LAZY DAZE, a symbol of his love for the sea and his wife. In addition to his maritime interests, David cherished the nature that surrounded him. Whether hiking through the woods or observing wildlife from his porch, David found a deep connection to the earth that inspired his love for cross-country skiing, camping, and fly fishing. A passionate woodworker, David loved crafting traditional Shaker furniture, which he made for his wife and his home.
David was also a master in the kitchen. Delighted in cooking for family and friends, David is known for preparing delicious prime rib, perfectly roasted Thanksgiving turkey, and succulent Maine lobster and seafood that brought people together. He found immense joy in food, wine, and the laughter of those who shared his table.
David’s family was the center of his world. He is survived by his loving wife, Zene, his beloved step-son, Sean, and Sean’s lovely wife Irna. He was predeceased by his siblings, Charlie and Maude, and his favorite dog, Chocolate. Throughout his final days, Zene, Sean, and Irna remained by his side, offering unwavering love and support. A heartfelt thank you to Destinee Johnson, his exceptional caregiver, for the unwavering support and care she provided. David’s legacy endures in the lessons he imparted, the love he shared, and the lasting memories he created with all who were fortunate to know him. David’s warm farewell was always the same: “Blessed be.” And so, we say, “Blessed be, Davy. We will miss you.”
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday April 27th from 4 to 6 PM on the 28th floor of Bayfront Towers, 1 Beach Drive, St Petersburg FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the MIT Center for Cancer Research.
