Robert Theobald, age 87, passed away on February 26, 2026. He was born on September 29, 1938, in Manilla, Iowa, to James and Dorothy Theobald

Robert graduated from Manilla High School in 1956 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University in 1960. A proud Cyclone through and through, he remained a devoted Iowa State sports fan for the rest of his life, cheering faithfully through every season.

Shortly after college, Robert began a long and distinguished career with the United States Treasury, where he served from 1960 until his retirement in 1996. His dedication to his work was matched only by his dedication to his family.

In 1960, Robert married the love of his life, Vera Lindemann, and together they built a life grounded in commitment, humor, and steady devotion. He often said there was “so much in this country to see,” and he and Vera enjoyed traveling across the United States, making memories along the way. He treasured the times he was able to spend with his sons—moments that became stories retold with a twinkle in his eye. He was an exceptional husband and father, known for his quiet strength and his wonderfully dry sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy; his infant brother, Timothy; and his infant granddaughter, Amanda Theobald.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Vera; his sons, Timothy (Jane), Michael (Lori), and Robert (Beth); his grandchildren, Jessica (Mike) Wahl, Matthew Theobald (Cameron Owens), Zachary Theobald, and Ian Theobald; his great-grandchildren, Briggs and Sutton Wahl.

A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to support Iowa State University academic programs, honoring Robert’s lifelong pride in his alma mater.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
