Born on December 9, 1950, in Mitchell, South Dakota, he was the second child of Alvin and Marjorie Lampe. He grew up on a small farm near Salem, South Dakota and graduated from Salem Public High School with the Class of 1970.
Following high school, he entered the United States Air Force, serving his country in Vietnam, Germany, and other assignments around the world. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and, after twelve years of service, was honorably discharged, which was a service he remained deeply proud of throughout his life. Long after his uniform was folded away, he continued to serve by helping fellow veterans navigate VA benefits and challenges.
He earned his Master Gardener Certificate and found great satisfaction working in the groundskeeping department at Iowa Western Community College, a job he truly enjoyed until his retirement in 2007.
He was an active member of the VFW Post 737, serving as Commander from 1990 to 1991, a role he held with pride. In 1992, he married Alice Marie Freyer. Their time together was cut short by her passing in 1995.
After retirement, he became a familiar and friendly presence at the Carter Lake, Iowa Community Center, where he enjoyed playing cards, socializing, and staying connected. In later years, he was often seen riding his scooter around Carter Lake and was a part of the town’s everyday rhythm. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and in his younger years, a dedicated bowler.
