Steve Huffstetter went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness in Hercules, CA. He was a lifelong California native and liked to say that he never lived farther than 5 miles as the crow files from his birthplace. He was a resident of Hercules. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, his cousins David Smith and Jill Gilmore, as well as his half-sister, Julie Starr.
Steve was one of those larger-than-life men who loved life and lived it to the full. He always sought to be a fierce, fierce friend, which I believe he fulfilled. He prided himself in being one of the most accessible people on the planet. He was famous, or should I say infamous, for his bad jokes. The last one I remember him pulling was: “What’s the difference between a bad joke and a dad joke? – One letter!” Sorry – had to leave you all with one last Steve groaner. I can hear him roaring in laughter and nodding his head in agreement to that.
He was a huge train fan and was a member as well as the Club Secretary of the Carquinez Model Railroad Society. Model railroading was truly one of his great passions. He loved being able to help others as often and whenever he could. He was very skilled at soldering and at working on HO scale trains. He became known as the Locomotive Whisperer as he was very good at diagnosing and fixing problems. He and his wife were also members and volunteered for many years at the Swanton Pacific Railroad Club.
He loved music and was a choir member for many years. He also helped out running sound periodically at Hope Center Covenant Church, in Pleasant Hill, where he was a member. He loved mixing the music in such a way that each instrument and voice blended well together. He also was active in the Wednesday morning Men’s bible study and served on the church’s greeting team.
Steve was very gifted at technology, which made his job as a telephone technician a perfect match. Whenever he assisted a customer, his goal was to deliver excellent service that prevented the need for any corrective action. He truly loved and was very gifted at his work prior to his retirement.
A Memorial Service will be held at Hope Center Covenant Church on Saturday, July 26th at 1:00 P.M. The church is located at 2275 Morello Avenue, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Steve’s name to Hope Center Covenant Church, 2275 Morello Avenue, Peasant Hill, CA 94523-1850 or to the Carquinez Model Railroad Society, 645 Loring Avenue, Crockett, CA 94525.
