Born on March 18, 1963, in Cold Spring, New York, James grew up surrounded by a big, loving family. From a young age, he showed a passion for food and creativity. At just 18, James followed his dream across the country, moving to California to pursue a career as a chef.
Over the years, James worked in San Francisco staples, like Little Joe’s in North Beach and Marin Joe’s in Corte Madera. Whether working in bustling restaurant kitchens or preparing quiet family meals, he poured his heart and soul into his cooking.
In 2006, James began a new chapter, becoming a Correctional Officer at San Quentin State Prison. He was a firm believer in second chances and treating people with dignity. He served with integrity and a firm belief in justice.
Beyond his career, James was a devoted father and grandfather and a loyal friend, remembered for his generous spirit and compassion. Known to be the friend people turned to in times of crisis for a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on.
He is survived by his son, James Paul, his daughter in law Vanessa, and their three children, Rafael, Aliana and Adrian, his friend/ex-wife, Kimberly, and his eight siblings, John, Paul, Beth, Cas, Eileen, Charlie, Mary Ellen and Nancy. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ralph and Eileen. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in every life he touched.
A memorial service to celebrate James’s life will be held on September 13, 2025 at 11 AM at St. Brendan’s Church in San Francisco. All who knew and loved him are invited to attend.
