William was born in Big Stone Gap, VA to Lizzie Campbell and Doctor Scalf on June 14, 1939. With a lifelong passion for airplanes and flying he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served a tour in Vietnam. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University. He retired as Chief Master Sargent of 443 MAW Chief Aircrew Standardization and Evaluation Loadmaster after thirty (30) dedicated years of service. Nineteen eighty-seven (1987) was the year he married his sweetheart Fran Toma and spent the rest of his days in his fairytale romance while teaching as a Ground Flight Instructor for American Airlines. He was an artist, a painter, a poet, supporter of the arts and a true Gentlemen. He loved his family, traveling, dancing, watching OU Sooner and Dallas Cowboys football, “deep talks” and pursuing the meaning of life over his version of a two-finger pour.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Lizzie Campbell and Doctor Scalf.
Bill is survived by his spouse: Fran “Frannie Annie”, his children: Michael “Michael Anthony” and spouse Thuy “Twee Twee”, Christopher “Pal”, Bethaney “Boo”, Jimmy “Scotty” Sellers and spouse Alissa “Aliss”, Angie “Ang” Murphy and spouse Dennis, his brothers Rick and Roger, ten (10) grandchildren and six (6) soon to be nine (9) great grandchildren.
The Scalf family wishes to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff in ICU, CCU and Rehab units at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, Grapevine, Texas.
