Also, surviving her is one sister, Deanie Denning of Plano, TX, one sister-in-law, Judy Waldrop of Burnet, TX, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Truetta was first a wife and mother. Family and church were the most important things in her life. Truetta joined the Church of Christ at age nine and as an adult served as a church volunteer for meals and visitations, and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She also kept little ones for other working mothers and started neighborhood morning coffee time for mothers of young children.
Truetta received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Tarleton State University in 1979 and her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 1982. After teaching for several years, she served fourteen years as Elementary Principal in both Jacksboro, TX and Pilot Point, TX, before her retirement in 1995. She liked to think of herself as a motivator, not just a teacher. After retirement she and Ray Ned traveled and visited all 50 states, during which time she expanded a lifetime of sewing skills into the design and creation of multitudes of quilts.
Her first quilt was made in 2000 for her oldest grandson and since that time, her husband, each child, grandchild and great grandchild has received at least one quilt. All special occasions were memorialized with a new quilt, including high school graduations, college graduations, marriages, birth of a child and retirements. Dozens of individually designed table runners, placemats, and wall hangings were given as gifts over the last 23 years, along with many quilt donations to Santa’s Helpers. She also taught others the artistry and skill of quilt making, both individually and in group classes. In her later years, memory quilts were a passion along with historical family scrapbooks. Truetta Walker’s love of family and her quilts and creations will forever be remembered as a family legacy for future generations.
