Tommy Lee Mixon of Arlington, Texas passed away on Tuesday, June 27th at the age of 94. He was born on August 23rd, 1928 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi where he grew up, as the youngest of six children.
He graduated from Houston, Mississippi High School in 1946 and earned engineering degrees at both Mississippi State in 1950 (BS) and Texas A&M University (MS) in 1955.
Tom served as an officer in the United States Army with an anti-aircraft artillery unit in Germany during the post WW2 occupation and later in the United States Army Reserve. He worked in numerous engineering services in the petrochemical and manufacturing industries to include industrial safety and noise and vibration abatement.
He was actively involved in his children’s sports activities, serving as a little league baseball umpire and competitive swimming referee. Tom and his wife, Jo, traveled throughout Texas during the 1970’s to attend their children’s swim meets.
Tom was born with and always had a sweet tooth. He loved to get ice cream with his family at Braum’s or “floaties” at Wendy’s. He loved being a grandpa, cooking hot dogs for his grandkids and renaming the guest room “the Campsite” for the grandkids’ sleepovers.
He is preceded in death by his parents Jahugh and Agnes Mixon, sisters Pauline Drane, Margaret Stafford, and Myrtie Mae Mixon, and brothers James Mixon and Bertie Jay Mixon.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Josephine Harrell Mixon, sons Lee (Patrice) and Hugh (Maggie) Mixon, daughter, Laura (Chuck) Sturgeon, and grandchildren Ellie Mixon and Aspen Mixon.
The family would like to thank the Arlington Masonic Home for their care during Tom’s residency there.
Internment will be at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery
