She then received a degree as a Registered Nurse from the University of New Mexico in 1990.
Susan met her husband, Bryan J Spiegel, of Norwalk, OH, while attending college in 1974, and they married September 13, 1975. Together they raised their three children; Michael Smith (Bethany), Michelle Spiegel, and Angela McNatt (Kevin) and have four grandsons, Matthew McNatt (Jordan), Zachary McNatt, and Gabriel and Nathaniel Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mervin and Charlotte Carman.
During her nursing career, she served first at Albuquerque Veterans Administration Hospital in cardiac intensive care, then at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque in labor and delivery. While at “Pres” she and other professionals pioneered a successful case management program, PRESious Beginnings, committed to prevent pre-term labor by identifying and overcoming risks. She continued her nursing career in Texas in the post-partum ward at the HEB Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital and participated in a number of helicopter emergency flights.
Her children, family and friends will remember her gentle, loving spirit, her warm smile and great faith.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the HEB Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Emergency and ICU physicians and nursing staff for their professionalism, as well as to the skilled and dedicated nurses and techs that provided hospice care and comfort during this very emotional time.
