Sue Ellen Cunningham Wood, 91, of Crowley, Texas, entered the presence of her Lord on July 2, 2026—her beloved husband Tom’s 97th birthday. She was born October 26, 1934, in Houston, Texas. She left this world the same way she lived in it—with passionate faith, unwavering devotion, and a heart overflowing with love for her family.
For more than seven decades, Sue was the steady heartbeat of her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving and sacrificial mother, a proud and adoring grandmother and great-grandmother, and a cherished sister and friend to so many.
Her greatest joy was found in the simple moments: sitting with loved ones, listening with her whole heart, and speaking words filled with encouragement, wisdom, and bold faith.
Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Tom Wood. Since his passing right before Thanksgiving 2024, she had missed him deeply. Those 20 months were filled with a profound longing to be reunited with him in the presence of the Lord they both served so faithfully.
Sue took immeasurable pride and joy in each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her four children: Cathy Wood Davis (Jim), Julie Wood Hafer (Scott), Scott Wood (Katy), and Susan Wood Ward (Paul); ten grandchildren: Lindsay Davis Alvey (Josh), Ben Davis, Laura Hafer Falzon (Nick), Ashley Hafer Hefner (Brian), Austin Hafer (Maddy), Caroline Hafer Draz (Rakan), Christopher Wood, Julia Wood, Micah Ward (Maddie), and Eliana Ward; and seventeen great-grandchildren: Cameron & Caden Hughes, Parker, Skyler, Jaxon & Jace Alvey, Asher, Nora & Axson Falzon, Rowyn, Ellis and Gavin Hefner, Jack Hafer, Quinn Draz, and Makenna Ward.
Sue’s life was beautifully centered on Jesus. For the first 21 years of their marriage, she faithfully served as a military wife and devoted mother, raising their four children while supporting Tom’s service. Then came a life-changing encounter with the Lord that transformed their entire family. They surrendered their hearts to Christ, uprooted their lives, and together pursued Bible school and seminary.
From that point forward, Sue and Tom poured themselves wholeheartedly into Christian ministry—teaching God’s Word, pastoring churches, and serving on the mission field in China, Japan, Zimbabwe, Wales, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Haiti. Together they became a powerful force for the Kingdom, boldly encouraging others to press deeper into faith and experience the saving grace of their Savior.
Those who knew Sue will remember her warm smile, her passionate and outspoken love for the Lord, and the way her words carried the weight of earnest prayer and genuine care. Her life was a living testimony of faithfulness, strength, and bold devotion.
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the faith she lived so fully, and the many hearts she touched through her life.
Though we grieve her absence, we rejoice knowing she is now whole, joyful, and forever home—reunited with Tom on his birthday, safely embraced by her Savior, and surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her beautiful life.
Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Sue’s life at a Memorial Service on Saturday, July 25th at 11:00 AM at Crowley United Methodist Church, 509 Peach Street, Crowley, Texas 76036. Following the service, lunch will be served as a time of fellowship and family visitation. We would be so grateful for your presence as we remember and honor her together.
