Ruby Jean Johnson

Ruby Jean Price Johnson of Keller, TX left this world on 9/3/22 after a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 81. She was a devoted wife of her late husband, Ellison Capers Johnson, jr and a caring sister, mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband, Ellison Capers Johnson, jr. and her youngest daughter, Anne Stuckey Johnson of Keller TX. She will always hold a place in our hearts.

Ruby was born in Bishopville,SC in 1940 to John Ervin Price and Imogene O’dell Beasley Price. She was the second of 5 children. After graduating from Ashwood Central High School, she went on to complete her diploma in Nursing from the Medical University of SC in 1962. In 1967, she completed her diploma in Nurse Anesthesia from MUSC. She practiced nursing for 6 years in Panama, Canal Zone where she and Capers welcomed their daughters Heather and Anne into the world. In 1977 she completed her B.A. degree from Stephen’s College in Columbia,MO. In 1982 she completed a Master of Science degree from the University of South Carolina. Ruby loved the field of nursing, and she received multiple professional honors:

Director and Founder of the Baroness Erlanger center school of anesthesia in Chattanooga, TN

Baroness Erlanger award for outstanding leadership in education-1982

Agatha Hodgkins memorial award for outstanding nurse anesthetist in 1986

John Danforth Leadership award

Published in the AANA journal (american association of nurse anesthetists)

Past president of SC association of nurse anesthetists, past VP of Tennessee association of nurse anesthetists

Planned, coordinated, and wrote script for teaching videos on OB anesthesia

Director of the school of anesthesia at Richland Memorial Hospital, in Columbia SC

Ruby was a successful and respected nurse anesthetist and enjoyed teaching other nurses the field of nurse anesthesia. Her impact as a loving mother, a role model and a respected nurse educator was reflected in her oldest daughter Heather, choosing a career in school counseling and her youngest daughter Anne, choosing a career in healthcare practice management. Ruby will be greatly missed by everyone she touched both professionally and personally. She is survived by her younger sister, Patricia Vinson of Darien, GA, her oldest daughter, Heather Mikell Johnson Path, her son-in-law Thorsten Path, her grandchildren, Carsten Nicholas Path and Tessa Claire Path of Weaverville,NC. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC with interment at the gravesite at a date and time to be determined in the future.
