He was born on May 18th 1949 in Greenville, Texas and adopted by Joseph B. Cunningham and Ruth Cunningham as an infant. Joe, as he is known by his friends, grew up moving with his parents across many states and countries ultimately settling in North Texas. He graduated College at North Texas State University (currently UNT). Upon graduation he enlisted in the Air Force taking him to Shreveport, Louisiana where he would meet and later marry the love of his life, Patricia Cunningham.
He served his Country as an officer for the United States Air Force with great pride for over 27 years achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring. He was recognized for his leadership and commitment to providing for our Nations safety, receiving many service medals and decorations. His time in the Military took him and his family on many assignments that required them to relocate both within the United States and abroad. He has been described as a great friend, strong leader and dedicated.
Joe loved to travel, golf and spend time with his grandchildren. He always had a trip planned to explore new places and spent much of his time in retirement traveling as often as he could. His love for golf kept him active and in recent years drove him to participate as an extra in an independent movie “The Short Game”. A kid at heart he found comfort and joy playing with the grandkids and could often be found playing games, building legos or just being a kid with the kids. He was a great Husband, great Dad and an amazing “Poppie C”.
Joe is preceded in death by his father Joseph Bailey Cunningham, Mother Ruth Smith and Wife Patricia Cunningham. Joe is survived by his Son Bill Cunningham and Wife Julie Cunningham, Daughter Candyce Buescher and Husband Jason Buescher, Grandchildren Bailey and Andrew Cunningham, Evan and Rory Buescher, and Sister Betty Tignor.
Joe leaves this Earth lifted into the Gates of Heaven, reunited with loved ones, having blessed those who were fortunate to have known him.
Joe will be interred with his wife at the Arlington National Cemetery during a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting research to cure cancer.
His life will be remembered with close family and friends at a celebration of life in May.
