The Reverend John David Black was a kind and caring man who touched countless lives across generations. Born on October 27, 1945, in Maud, Texas, to Thelma “Tabo” and John D Black, he grew up in East Texas, developing a lifelong love for the outdoors.
After graduating from The University of Texas in 1968, he earned his Masters of Divinity from the Perkins School of Theology in 1972 and was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church. He served as a Youth Minister in Austin and Plano. Though he left the formal ministry in 1978, he never stopped ministering to everyone around him.
David’s love for nature led to a nearly 50-year career in the outdoor industry, where he continued to act as a pastor in the secular world. He was frequently called upon to lead weddings, baptisms, funerals, and convocations for major industry events. He also never left his youth ministry. He especially loved his "fishing ministry"—teaching Scouts to fly fish at Philmont and guiding youth from FUMC Dallas on retreats. He always imparted far more wisdom than just how to tie a knot or bait a hook.
David is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Betty Burrows Black; son Ben Black and daughter-in-law Amanda; and cherished grandsons Griffin, Meyer, Oliver, and Bryce. He is also survived by his sister Karen Long and brother-in-law Ron, as well as their son and granddaughters.
The family thanks their many friends for their enduring love and prayers.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on Saturday, July 11, at
10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1928 Ross Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75201, followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bridgeport Camp, a place of great meaning to the family that aligns with his dedication to youth ministry: bridgeportcamp.org/donate/.
