Joan Maxon Wright, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, passed away peacefully in Boyd, Texas, surrounded by her family. Born on May 14, 1939, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Joan was the eldest daughter of Earl and Dolores Maxon. Alongside her sisters, Jean, and June, she was part of the inseparable trio lovingly known as “The 3 J’s.”
Joan spent her formative years in Jacksonville, Florida, where she attended Landon High School and proudly served as co-captain of the Lionette drill team. After graduation, she briefly moved to California before returning home out of love and duty to her family. It was back in Jacksonville where she met the love of her life, Perry Wayne Wright, and together they shared 65 wonderful years of marriage.
As the wife of a Navy pilot, Joan embraced a life of travel and adventure, building loving homes for her daughters, Sharon and Diane, in many corners of the world. She traveled extensively in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia and spent several years living abroad with her family. Among her fondest memories were having tea with Queen Elizabeth II, and the entire royal family, at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, Scotland, receiving official recognition from the U.S. Navy for her unwavering support of military families in four major commands and taking a 10,000-mile cross-country trip with Wayne in their retirement.
When her daughters became teenagers, Joan re-entered the workforce first with State Farm Insurance and later at Interstate Securities Brokerage. Joan took great pride in her role as Office Manager and served with distinction.
In retirement, Joan and Wayne settled in Mandarin, Florida, rekindling friendships and making new memories with extended family. Joan was active in her church and the Landon High School Alumni Association. Summers were treasured for “Camp Grandmama” where she poured love into every activity with her grandchildren. Joan was particularly proud of her grandchildren’s adult accomplishments from honors college graduates, entrepreneurs, and exceptional parents amongst them.
The lure of great-grandchildren was irresistible, and Joan and Wayne relocated to Boyd, Texas. Joan cheered on her great-grandsons at football and baseball games and was front row center for her great-granddaughter’s dance and cheer recitals. She never missed an opportunity to spend time with them and cherished being a Gigi and was equally adored by her “greats.”
Joan is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughters Sharon Wright Adams (Walter) and Diane Wright Tippit (Mike); grandchildren Mindy Tippit Kinkade (Aaron), Jacob Tippit, Connor Adams, Samantha Tippit Nelson (Cody), Kyle Adams (Amber), Holly Tippit, Katherine Adams, and Callahan Adams; great-grandchildren Weston, Brock, Harper, Matix, Hunter, and Barron; her sister Jean Maxon Marshall (Terry); brother-in-law Richard Wright; sister-in-law Jeanette Wright Parham (Ed); and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Dolores Maxon, and her sister, June.
Joan will be remembered for her elegance, kindness, and fierce devotion to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, grace, and deep faith that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to be part of her life
A Memorial Service will be held this summer in Jacksonville, Florida.
