Joan was born to Walter E. Sarkela and Lila M. Sarkela, November 9, 1937 in Cloquet, Minnesota]. She graduated from Berkeley High School and attended the University of San Francisco. She married Richard E. Knapp and they lived together in Hurst, Texas.
She leaves as her legacy 6 children: Richard Sanchez (Darlene), of Irvine, California, Karen Sanchez of Hurst, Texas, Gary Sanchez of Fort Worth, Texas, Diane Reynolds (Rick) of Midland, Texas, Laura Stacey (Donald) of Hurst, Texas, and Marcy Fitch (Jay) of Hurst, Texas. She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Mike Sarkela (Roberta) of Sonoma, California. She also leaves to cherish her her 12 beloved grandchildren; Jason Sanchez (April); Bianca Edwards (Rich); Alex Reynolds; Michael Sanchez; Christopher Sanchez (Katie); Richard Stacey; Katherine Consigli (Michael); Emily Bodily (Cameron) Andrew; Sarah Mann (Leo); John Fitch (Sydney); and Jacob Fitch; as well as her 3 great-grandchildren, Jack, Vincent, and Tyler. Her family remembers her as a lady who loved her family with all of her heart.
She was preceded in death by Richard E. Knapp (spouse), Walter Sarkela, (father), and Lila Sarkela (mother).
