Jim, the youngest of four children was born on October 16, 1939, to Reese and Cleo Porter in Santa Anna, TX. He graduated from McCamey High School in 1958. Jim worked in the oilfield after graduating high school, but a cold winter on top of a drilling rig in Colorado encouraged him to go to college and earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Texas Tech University in 1965.
Jim was married to the love of his life Lyn for 59 years, just 10 days short of their 60th wedding anniversary.
JIm’s career included time working at the Boys Club of Wichita Falls and Continental Baking of Fort Worth. In 1977 after many years of wearing a tie and being on the road in various sales roles he and Lyn decided to leave the big city life and bought a small country store in Burkett, TX to raise their kids in the country and be closer to his parents. Jim was also a contract oilfield pumper, County Commissioner in Coleman County (12 years) and a weekend rancher.
Family was the most important thing to Jim, and he decided not to run for a fourth term as County Commissioner and to sell the ranch and move back to the DFW area to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He spent many countless hours at sporting events and cheerfully being the Uber driver for his grandchildren. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Argyle food bank in his later years. He will always be remembered for his kind and caring spirit.
Jim was preceded in death by his daughter Tamara Porter, grandson Colton Porter, parents Reese and Cleo Porter, brother Clarence Porter and sister Lela Young. Jim is survived by his wife Lyn, son and daughter in law Lance and Rose Porter of Denison, TX, son and daughter in law Brett and Elizabeth Porter of Westworth Village, TX, grandchildren Cooper Porter of Denton, TX, Aspen Porter of Sherman, TX, and Reagan Porter of San Marcos, TX. He is also survived by his sister Glenda Brown of Dalhart, TX, sister in law Joni Breeze of Kaufman, TX and many nephews and nieces.
JIm will be cremated and a private family service will take place later this year.
