James Peter Elving was born on 14 July 1949 to Effie Catherine (nee Fielden) and Homer Glenn Elving in Rochester, New York. Active in Boy Scouts he achieved the level of Eagle Scout. He graduated from East High School in Rochester, NY in 1967. Jim received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from RPI in Troy, New York in 1971. Following his graduation Jim began a distinguished 40-year career when he joined Saint-Gobain Abrasives (formally Norton Co.) as an Industrial Sales Territory Manager in the Ohio region.
In 1981 Jim transferred to the Coated Abrasives Manufacturing Division based in Troy, NY. where he held a variety of critical Product and Market Management positions focused on Industrial Metalworking Markets. Jim guided the technical development, scale-up, and release of several new proprietary products.
Throughout his career Jim was highly respected by the entire Industrial Sales organization for his guidance, market knowledge and technical product expertise.
He was a lifelong tennis player, loved his standard shift Jeep Wranglers, poolside with his dogs, travelling, and was a season ticket holder and great fan of RPI hockey for over 30 years.
He died on 12 June 2023 in Denton, Texas. Jim was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Dr. Jaime Marie Elving (1982-2019). His survivors include his wife, Marcia (Niehaus) Elving, and sisters Judith Bethe and Susan Christopher, nieces Heather Balch, Jennifer Bethe, and nephews Todd Bethe and Curt Balch.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
