Florence Evelyn Barnes Howard was born to Theodore Barnes and Anna Pluck Barnes on September 18, 1918. She attended The University of Texas but had to quit after a year, since money was tight. She continued her education going to Draughon’s Business College in San Antonio, Texas and became a Civil Service employee in Pearsall. After her marriage, she often was a secretary to her husband, Earl. Her ability to be such an astute bookkeeper still shows as seen by her files of pertinent information.
Evelyn and Earl Howard Jr. were married on April 20, 1941 in Hondo, Texas and made their home in Pearsall. She had a deep love and respect for him that made their marriage such a success. They truly loved one another. They had 3 children: Dr. Earl Winfield Howard III (deceased), Julianna Barnes Howard of Richardson, and Hollace Evelyn Howard Tyson of Fort Worth. Losing her son, Earl III was a very sad part of her life.
Evelyn sang in the Methodist choir beginning at about 9 years and continued singing at lots of functions. She would say, “I have married them and buried them!” She was certainly gifted with a beautiful voice and enjoyed delighting those who listened.
She was Treasurer of United Methodist Women for many years and loved playing Bridge as well. She was president of the Women’s Civic Club and president of the Parent-Teacher Club. For Church School, she served as Superintendent and of course remained very active in the First United Methodist Church, along with Earl.
The happy demeanor she exhibited was always present. Her love of song and Christianity was so evident in that smile! Even as she left Pearsall about 15 years ago to move to Fort Worth and be closer to her daughters and granddaughter, she fit right in to the life at Brookdale Ridgmar line dancing, playing bridge, reading and enjoying so many friends.
She loved reuniting with all members of her family – many from Earl’s side as well as hers. Everyone looked up to her and truly admired her.
After Earl’s passing, she and her sister, Mary Lois Barden, enjoyed traveling to England, Spain, and other countries, as well as all over the United States. The two of them were always close and Evelyn admired her big sister so much! She also lived a long life, passing at 99 years. They enjoyed making new friends in lots of places. Their English friend, David, made it a point to visit through the years.
Turning 100 was a milestone she achieved proudly, although a stroke affected her about 2 weeks before her birthday. Able to see her video made of her life, she mouthed the words of “How Great Thou Art” as she listened to herself sing it on the video
