Ed was the father of Dave (Ellen) Mooney, grandfather of Nora Mooney, brother of Janet Coria, and uncle to an untold number of nieces and nephews.
Originally from Syracuse, NY, Ed entered a Jesuit seminary after graduating from high school at St. John the Baptist Academy and eventually became a Jesuit priest. Upon his ordination, Ed was sent to the Philippines where he was a teacher and counselor in the Ateneo de Manila and Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro.
Upon leaving the priesthood in the late 1960s, Ed returned to secular life in New York, married, and became a teacher in Bethpage, Long Island, where he taught high school English. His relationships formed with his students, colleagues, and fellow Jesuits continued for decades, until his death.
After some twenty years, he returned to his counseling roots, as a social worker with St. Mary’s Children and Family Services in West Hempstead, NY.
Finally retiring in 1996, Ed followed the well-worn path of many New Yorkers, and moved to Florida. He enjoyed many years in St. Petersburg, staying active with extensive volunteering, daily walks, and frequent travel, along with his lifelong loves of reading, crossword puzzles, and corresponding with friends and family. Always pragmatic, when Ed realized he was slowing down a bit, he moved to Fort Worth in 2019 to be close to his family.
An avid volunteer, Ed worked with Pilgrim State Hospital, Meals on Wheels, St. Vincent DePaul, and Daystar Life Center in St. Petersburg. His extensive travels also included “working vacations” with humanitarian organizations in places like Mexico, Cuba, Iran, Palestine, and even the USSR.
Ed was predeceased by his parents Donald and Mildred; sisters Anne, Marian, and Alice; and brother Donald, and former wife Noreen.
