Scot Alan McEwen, 66, passed away at his home on May 3, 2025, in Flowery Branch, Georgia. Born on April 26, 1959, in Pasadena, California, Scot lived a life defined by strength, integrity, innovation, and unwavering devotion to his family and faith.
A pioneer in his field, Scot was the founder and President of Backflow Engineering Group, Inc., which he established in 1985. With over five decades of experience in plumbing and mechanical systems, water and wastewater management, and civil/site engineering, Scot became a respected leader throughout Georgia and the Southeast. His credentials were extensive: Georgia Master Plumber (Class II Non-Restricted), Certified Backflow-Preventer Assembly Tester and Repair Specialist, Certified Cross-Connection-Control Surveyor, NIOSH-certified in Confined Space Entry & Rescue, and an international instructor for TREEO. His expertise left an indelible mark on countless industrial and commercial projects.
In 2015, Scot’s passion for education and innovation led him to found the National Cross-Connection Control & Hydraulics Training Institute (NCCCHTI). He designed and built the only portable training classroom in the world featuring every backflow-preventer assembly device mounted on a trailer—fully functional and able to be connected to water. After retiring from contracting in November 2022, he continued sharing his knowledge through training and consulting for companies including Holtkamp HVAC & Plumbing and Reynalds Brothers Plumbing & Environmental. He also designed the wet lab at The Water Tower in Buford, GA while battling cancer in the hospital in 2022, and remained their lead instructor until his death.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Scot was a man of deep faith and character. Though raised Presbyterian, he converted to Catholicism in 2019 and became an active member of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Dawsonville, Georgia. His love for Jesus was evident in every aspect of his life—from how he treated others to the fierce love and protection he gave his family.
Scot faced life’s challenges with remarkable resilience. He battled two rare forms of leukemia with grace and dignity—never losing hope or his signature optimism. He was both physically and mentally strong, always approaching adversity with a smile and a plan of action.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Debra; beloved daughter Jessica Eryn; cherished mother Donna; sisters Carol and Kathy; brother-in-law Rex Garrett; niece Elise Garrett; brother- and sister-in-law David and Christi Burroughs; nephew and niece-in-law Travis and Vanessa Burroughs; great-niece Ansley Burroughs; great-nephew Logan Burroughs; as well as many friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill McEwen.
Scot had a zest for life that extended far beyond his career. He loved scuba diving—just one certification shy of becoming a master diver—and found joy in hunting, fishing, hiking, playing golf, and cheering on his favorite football team, the Georgia Bulldogs. A true craftsman at heart, he always had a project underway at home. His hands were rarely idle because he found purpose in building things—both tangible structures and lasting relationships.
To those who knew him, Scot was one-of-a-kind: genuine, honest, kind-hearted, thoughtful, gentlemanly, respectful—a man whose integrity was unmatched. He never met a stranger; conversations with him could stretch for hours without ever running dry. He was an incredible husband and father whose love for his family knew no bounds.
May Scot’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched—with every word of wisdom shared, every project completed with care, every act of kindness offered freely.
