It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rich Furness, who departed this life peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 23, 2025, in St. Simons Island, Georgia. Born in Seattle, Washington, Rich lived a life defined by courage, generosity, and a deep devotion to family and community.
Rich proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a helicopter door gunner, earning five Air Medals for his bravery and commitment. His service reflected the strength of character that would guide him throughout his life.
In 1989, Rich founded Performance Pumps and led the company for over 30 years. His leadership and integrity built more than a successful business—they built lasting relationships and a reputation for excellence.
Rich was a dedicated member of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Posse, where he participated in numerous search and rescue missions and provided security in the surrounding areas on horseback. He volunteered his time for 35 years and was nominated as Captain for several years. His service to the Portland community was marked by compassion, integrity, and a steadfast sense of duty.
A true cowboy at heart, Rich had a lifelong passion for rodeo and earned numerous awards for his skill in horseback competition. He also found joy in playing golf and taking unforgettable trips with his children and grandchildren—moments he cherished deeply.
Rich was a distinguished gentleman, known for his warmth, gentlemanly spirit, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. His presence was a gift to all who knew him.
He is survived by his son, Alan Furness (and Candace Furness), his daughter, Carol Furness Pollock (and John Pollock), and six wonderful grandchildren. Rich’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he loved so dearly.
