Dr. Maureen McGarvey Dinges, an esteemed speech pathologist, distinguished professor, and tireless advocate for marginalized communities, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, at the age of 78, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on March 27, Dr. Dinges dedicated more than three decades of her professional career to speech pathology, where her expertise, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence left an indelible mark on countless lives. As a compassionate educator and respected scholar, her work embodied a lifelong commitment to promoting effective communication, inclusivity, and personal empowerment.
In the early 1980s, Dr. Dinges emerged as a pioneering advocate during the AIDS crisis, tirelessly working to raise awareness, provide compassionate care, and support community education during a time of widespread fear and misunderstanding. Her advocacy extended to the transgender community, where she actively offered essential resources and guidance, championing inclusivity and acceptance when few others did. Her courage and dedication were instrumental in paving the way for greater empathy and understanding.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Dinges was a devoted philanthropist with a deep commitment to social justice and community welfare. She generously supported numerous organizations, including the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus, AID Atlanta, Kennesaw State University, and various charitable initiatives across the Atlanta and Pennsylvania regions. She and her late husband, William Anthony Dinges, were recognized members of the 1855 Society at Millersville University, acknowledging their significant contributions to the institution’s mission of education and community enrichment.
Dr. Dinges was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Dorothea McGarvey of Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia; her sister, Sondra Held (Thomas); and her beloved husband, William Anthony Dinges.
She is survived by her devoted nephew, Dr. Patrick Held (Neal Tilghman), along with a multitude of cherished friends, colleagues, and former students who will continue to honor her remarkable legacy.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her supported charities or a cause of personal significance.
