It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Larry Gene Mahoney, a man with an unwavering love and commitment to his family, friends, and country. Larry was born on April 16, 1945, and left this earthly world fighting like a true soldier on May 11, 2026.
Larry was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Lt. Colonel Ted H. Mahoney and Mary Irene Smith. During Larry’s childhood, he traveled the world with his family while his father served as an aircraft commander in the United States Air Force. As a young child, Larry joined the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub Scout. He continued to move through the ranks as he grew older. In 1960, he became part of an elite group of 1% of eligible Boy Scouts who earned the rank of Eagle Scout after completing 21 specific merit badges and serving as a life scout with active leadership. After graduating high school, Larry earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at the University of North Texas.
He married the love of his life, Susan Arlene Jackson, on July 10, 1968, in North Richland Hills, TX. Their beautiful life began together when Susie’s brother introduced them on family night at Leonard Scout Reservation. They were inseparable from that very moment.
Larry bravely answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army in 1967. He proudly served for 6 years in C Company, 5th Battalion, 82nd Airborne, and ultimately achieved the rank of Captain. He was boots on the ground in Vietnam from February 19, 1969 – February 5, 1970. During his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/ 4 Bronze Service Stars, Air Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ 60 Device, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, and Two Overseas Bars. Larry’s patriotism was unshakeable. He served his country with honor and carried that same spirit of service into every aspect of his life.
After his military service, Larry chose to continue serving others by joining the Longhorn Council, Boy Scouts of America. He worked his way through the ranks as District Executive, Camp Director, and Finance Director. He later went on to build a successful career with the National Headquarters, eventually serving as the Assistant Regional Director for the Southern Region. He spent many years leading a team who created lasting memories with Wood Badge and Camp Schools as well as the National and World Jamborees until his retirement in 2010. In 2016, Larry received the Boy Scout’s prestigious Silver Antelope Award for his character for making a significant and lasting impact on young people through his outstanding service.
Although Larry enjoyed riding his NuStep Cross Trainer, clocking 9,632,883 steps, his favorite activities were spending time with his family, weekly dinners with his friends, and sharing military stories with his Veteran group.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lt. Colonel Ted H Mahoney and Mary Smith and brother, Lt. Colonel Roger “Ace” Mahoney.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Susan Arlene Jackson, who beautifully cared for him until his last breath.
