Joe Lee Griggs, aged 76, passed away peacefully on March 19th, 2025, in Alpharetta, Georgia, after a protracted battle with dementia. He was born on July 3rd, 1948, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Astor Gary Griggs and Dorothy Irene Hammill. He graduated from Duke University in 1970 with a degree in electrical engineering. Being subject to the draft, Joe joined the US Navy in January 1971 and served as a supply officer until June 1975. Upon leaving the service, Joe was hired by Western Electric as an information technology specialist. Joe’s job evolved over the years, what with the advent of personal computers in the 1980s and then the invention of networking, to name two technologies that he developed skills in over the years. Joe retired in June 2002. After retirement, he joined his wife’s company, Speedwell Consultants, where he spent 20 years providing custom software solutions for Speedwell’s customers.
Joe will most be remembered for his excellent skills in building and repairing all manner of things around the house and his generosity in helping those around him, especially with other family members’ computers. His major “around the house” projects included a wooden deck that will probably still be standing after the brick house it’s attached to falls down and an outbuilding for the gas-powered lawn equipment that will easily serve as a playhouse for future generations.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Eleanor King, to whom he was married for 54 years, a son, Kenneth King Griggs (Laura), and a daughter, Melissa Jane Griggs Archer (Raymond), as well as two grandsons and two granddaughters. In addition, he is survived by a brother, James Gary Griggs (Susan), two sisters, Judith Marilyn Griggs Browning and Janet Lynne Griggs Ference (Jacob), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe and Judy often took trips to the various national parks. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the National Park Service.
