Vivian was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on February 15, 1945, to John Thury and Beatrice Thury (nee Bouchard). She grew up in Bridgeport and graduated from Warren Harding High School in 1962. She is survived by her children Craig Cody, of East Hartland, CT, Debora Burns, of East Haven, CT, Paula (Jon) Mroz of Wallingford, CT, and Michael (Lauren) Condron, of Monroe, CT. She is also survived by her grandchildren Tanner Mroz, of Guilford, Connecticut, Sarah (Alex) Luciani, of East Haven, Connecticut, and Olivia and Desmond Condron, both of Monroe, CT. She is also survived by her sister, Eleanor Sabo of Pinellas Park, Florida, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Beatrice Thury, her sister, Valerie Hahl, late, of Aurora, Colorado, and her beloved husband of 28 years, William Mattie.
In 1962, Vivian gave birth to her son, Craig, who was born with cerebral palsy. Although she was young, she never gave up on him and did whatever she could to provide him with a happy life, which he is still living to this day. After two prior marriages to Richard Cody (son, Craig) and Charles Cennamo (daughter, Debora), Vivian moved to Hamden in 1972 with her third husband, John Condron, where she then had her daughter Paula and her son, Michael. She lived in Hamden for 49 years until 2021, when she entered the skilled nursing facility, Madison House, and later, Autumn Lake of Cromwell.
Throughout her life, she worked several jobs where she cultivated lifelong friendships, including Howard Johnson’s on Long Wharf, Hainsworth Sports on Rte. 80 in East Haven, and Home Depot in North Haven, where she worked as a sales associate in the paint department until her retirement.
Vivian would always greet her customers and co-workers alike with a friendly smile and would engage them in genuine and upbeat conversations. Her favorite pastimes were singing in the local choir as a baritone; playing gin rummy with her husband, Bill; playing Jeopardy, Family Feud and board games with her kids and grandkids; and dancing to 50’s and 60’s music with her friend, Mick Lonardo, at Home Depot Christmas parties. Her favorite musical groups were The Beatles, Elvis, The Eagles, Little River Band and Bob Seger. Music was a huge part of Vivian’s life, and she will be lovingly remembered every time one of “ma’s songs” comes on the radio.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Vivian on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, Connecticut, with calling hours from 1-3 p.m. and a non-denominational service to follow from 3-4 p.m., where family and friends are welcome to speak. While flowers are appreciated, those who wish to may also make a donation to Vivian’s son Craig’s group home, CIB (Oak Hill), 47 Old Town Road, East Hartland, Connecticut 06027.
