To know this man was to love this man.
Robert (Bob) Lawrence Winston, age 93, died peacefully on Sunday, February 27, 2022, surrounded by his children. He was born at home in Revere, Massachusetts to Charles and Tillie (nee Cushner) Weinstein. He lived in Revere until his marriage in 1955.
Robert enlisted in the Army in 1947 just prior to the start of his senior year at Revere High School and towards the end of World War II. He was stationed stateside at Los Alamos, New Mexico. After his honorable discharge, he enrolled in Suffolk University in Boston where he earned his baccalaureate degree in Journalism.
Bob and his wife, Carole, were married for 62 years. They met on Revere Beach, Massachusetts when Carole and friends needed a fourth for bridge. After they were married in 1955, they moved from the Boston area to Plainfield, New Jersey where Bob started his career in education as a teacher. He went on to earn his master’s degree in Education from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. By his retirement from education in 1991, Robert was the social studies coordinator for the Freehold Regional High School District where he hired, supervised, and mentored a great team of teachers.
Bob always had the latest gadgets. His was the first house on the street to have a color TV despite the cost being so exorbitant. His children remember neighbors gathering to watch the small color screen on the huge console. He also leaves behind his computer, his iPad, and his Google assistant (who patiently repeated the time and told him jokes that made him laugh and groan).
Along the way, Bob and Carole raised three children, at least one of whom did not share his love of social studies and especially World War II. In his later years one of his favorite pastimes was watching The History Channel on TV and Old Jews Telling Jokes on YouTube.
Bob and Carole loved to travel. Cruise ships were their favorite mode of travel. They especially enjoyed visiting Alaska, Europe, and Russia. While at sea, Bob could usually be found at a table playing blackjack or poker. He was cremated with a royal flush hidden in his pocket.
Born by the ocean, he never lost his love of the beach. In his later years, he found solace visiting the ocean daily, watching the boats, feeding the birds, and feeling the ocean air in his face. He loved eating lobster and fried whole-belly clams (a New England specialty) and enjoyed seeking the best restaurants for seafood in Connecticut.
Despite spending most of his adult life in New Jersey and Florida, Bob was a New Englander through and through. The Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots dominated the television when his teams were playing. Wearing his Patriots cap in Southern Florida often resulted in conversations with other displaced New Englanders.
Bob found great comfort from his dogs. He had dogs growing up and three dogs when he moved to Connecticut. He ensured that his dogs were properly pampered at the expense of any human needs.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife Carole (Sanfield), his parents Charles Weinstein and Tillie (Cushner) Winston, and his sister Ruth (Weinstein) Goldman. He is survived by his children Cheryl Winston, Dayna Navaro, and Jeffrey Winston, and his grandchildren Richard Schulman, Jonathan Schulman, Noah Winston, and Sophia Winston, and nephews Alan Goldman and Kenneth Goldman. His family thanks his home health aides and Hospice for allowing him to remain at home, for enriching his life, and for easing his passing.
