The beautiful and generous heart of Judith Gore Powers stopped on February 19, 2025. Judy, as her friends called her, was born in Boston on June 12,1937 to Marion Charlotte (Adams) Gore and Harry Brigham Gore and resided in Amherst, New Hampshire most of her life. In 1971 she married the love of her life Dana Powers and raised five children, Jill Masten Iuliano (Joseph), Lisa Masten Hoagland (Scott), Jeffrey Masten (Betty), Craig Powers (Marcia) and Douglas Powers (Lynn). The greatest joy for Judy was being the grandmother to 11 grandchildren - Quinn, Keenan and Grant Iuliano, Mia Hoagland, Andrew, Margaux and Abigail Masten, Brandon and Malorie Powers and Lisa Mousseau and Derek Powers and great-grandmother to 10 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her two sisters-in law Mary Louse Benson and Deborah Gore as well as several nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
Judy was a kind and friendly soul and very much a character. Much to the chagrin of her children, she could strike up a conversation in an elevator, doctor’s office, ladies restroom or checkout line and walk away with a new friend. She was known for her generosity, friendliness and sweet demeanor. She exemplified her humanity through compassion and warmth; she modeled her parenting by being selfless and loving; and she offered her grandchildren unconditional love and support.
Judy worked in the public-school systems for more than 50 years in Amherst, NH, Milford, NH and finally in Newington, CT. Her calling was to work with and support the varying needs of her students. She innately connected with children, putting them at ease so that they could become the best versions of themselves.
Judy was no stranger to bringing cookies, banana bread, or coffee cake to the post office, school or a friend in need. For her, food was love. Her care packages were legendary by lifting spirits through sharing her home cooked food with her fortunate recipients. She was known to show up at a college dorm with a lasagna and a case of beer, just because. Judy’s love of pickle juice, liver, raw hot dogs and other unusual Mom foods made her children cringe.
Judy and Dana forged a loving life together in Amherst, eventually moving to Nashua, NH as they neared retirement. She lost him to cancer in 2007, and their memories together carried her forward. She moved to Newington, CT in 2008 to be near family, living 5 minutes from Lisa, Scott and her buddy Mia and becoming an integral part of their day-to-day lives.
Although the vacancy created by her loss will be difficult to endure, the family is thankful and grateful that she was part of our lives for as long as she was and comforted knowing that Judy is now with her beloved Dana. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Judy to her favorite charity St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 http://www.stjude.org/donate.
A graveside memorial service will be held in Amherst, NH at a later date.
