John Ransom Post III

John Ransom Post, III (70) of Litchfield, Connecticut, died peacefully on December 21, 2022, after a long illness. John was born to John, Jr. and Mary LeCocq Post on December 10, 1952, in Pasadena, California. When he was three, he moved to Huntington, Long Island, returning to California when he was fifteen where he attended Miramonte High School in Orinda. During high school, he enjoyed California’s outdoors at every opportunity and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Chico State and the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He graduated with a BS in Zoology.

John’s entire career was spent working in the pharmaceutical industry. He started with Pfizer in 1975, working in their Sales Department. He later transitioned to Marketing and eventually retired from Pfizer as Area President: Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. He spent nine years in the middle of his career working at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical Company in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

While John’s professional career brought him a great deal of satisfaction, he felt that he really bloomed after he retired. He had more time to devote to the Pharm League, a fantasy baseball league he founded in 1976. He moved to Litchfield, Connecticut, in 2013, after having lived in California, Connecticut, Brazil, Canada, New York and Pennsylvania and immediately embraced the community. He chaired the Board of Directors of the Litchfield Community Center and the town-sponsored Sustainable Litchfield Committee. Two of his proudest accomplishments re: the Sustainable Litchfield Committee were the creation of a solar array which has provided the energy to run Litchfield High School since 2021 and a wildflower pollinator meadow which surrounds the solar panels. He also loved to cook and collected an enviable set of recipes.

John was a man whose values were reflected in his actions. He didn’t just wish that things could be better; he did the hard work required to make them so. His Net Zero home reflected his belief that all of life is interconnected and that one must have and demonstrate respect for the environment. In covering his home in their November 2019 edition, Connecticut Magazine dubbed John the “Net Zero Hero” for the achievement of having all the energy needs of his home sourced from the home’s own geothermal system and solar panels. His 80’ x 50’ organic garden rounded out his love of a farm to table, zero-carbon-footprint lifestyle. The garden produced delicious crops of fruits and vegetables that his friends and family enjoyed along the way.

John is survived by his children Kevin Post (wife, Karen) of Darien and Kristen Dufour (husband, Matt) of Fairfield and by his friend and former spouse, Gail Post of Milford. He is missed by the grandchildren he loved: Derek, Emerson, and Cormac Post and Ryan and Tyler Dufour. They are comforted by the belief that their Papa is “with the birds,” an idea which captures both his spirit and his love of nature. Additionally, he will be remembered by his siblings: Anne Schweiger of Arizona, Margaret Post of Washington and Thomas Post of California.

A plaque was created by the Sustainable Litchfield Committee in dedicating the solar array and wildflower pollinator garden to John. It reads, in part, John is “an ardent advocate and practitioner of sustainable living…John inspires us all to tread more lightly on this earth…” The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to the Litchfield Community Center, the Litchfield Land Trust, or the White Memorial Conservation Center. A memorial will be held at the Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road, Litchfield, Connecticut on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 11:00 am.
