He was born on May 1, 1946 to Frederick T. Wright Jr. and Hildegard Uebach in Mannheim, Germany. Fred came to the United States in 1948, where he settled with his parents in Narragansett, Rhode Island. He was the oldest of four children from his parents marriage; a brother and two sisters. His father passed away in 1962 when Fred was sixteen. As the oldest male in the household, Fred worked to help his mother Hildegarde provide support for his younger siblings. His mother later married William H. Cotter Jr and they had a daughter, which gave Fred a fourth sibling.
Fred was the father to three sons (Fred, David and Mark) and raised them in Narragansett. Professionally, he was a Quality Assurance Engineer for many years with Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut and Westinghouse in Sunnyvale, California. In addition, he worked for the Gilman Brothers Company in Bozrah, Connecticut. Before retiring from the workforce, Fred was employed at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, where he worked in the cash cage. His chair in the cage was literally a mountain of currency. When he spoke of this, he always had a twinkle in his eye.
In 1993, Fred married the love of his life, Pamela Aberdeen. They were married 29 years at the time of her death in 2022 and resided in Waterford, Connecticut. Her unexpected passing left a massive void in his heart and the last year of Fred’s life was at times very hard without Pam by his side. He spoke of her always with such love, admiration and respect.
Fred was a passionate foodie, amazing cook, loved beer, cigars, fine spirits, shooting pool, motorcycles, playing poker, football, working on his yard, home projects and spending time with his family and friends. Fred was a fantastic conversationalist, wonderful storyteller, friendly, personable and could carry a conversation with literally anyone or anybody about any topic. He had the type of personality that drew people to him and were happy to be part of his life circle.
He is survived by his sons and their spouses; Frederick S. Wright (Scott), David J. Wright (Meg) and Mark P. Wright (Rachael). His sisters, Gretchen Tingley (Carl), Christa Orsini (Daniel); step-brother, Peter Cotter (Madeleine), sister-in-law, Janice DeMarco (Richard), three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He left behind many nieces, nephews and a loving circle of friends. In addition, he is survived by his dearest friends, Frederic “Rich” and Courtney Wolfe and their two young sons, Lachlan and Tanner. They have been there for Fred and Pam in a million and one ways. They are not just friends, but an integral part of the Wright family. Fred will be forever loved and missed by all his family and friends. A fun and momentous celebration of his life will take place in the spring. Details to be shared at a later date.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife, sister (Heidi Reardon), brother (Stephen Wright), step-father (William Cotter Jr), step-brother (William “Billy” Cotter), nephews (Damian Tingley) and (Nathan Orsini), and brother-in-law (James Aberdeen).
Fred’s family would like to thank the medical team at Bride Brook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Niantic, and the ICU and hospice staff at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London for the exemplary support and care Fred received. It was through their skill and dedication, that he passed on from this life without pain or discomfort and with dignity.
