Born on April 20, 1945, in Hamburg, New Jersey, Dale was the son of Harriet and Charles Rowett. He was predeceased by his brother, Gene Rowett. Dale attended Yale University and later earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dale returned to Connecticut for his medical residency at Yale New Haven Hospital and remained in the state for the rest of his life and career. For more than 50 years, he was a prominent internist and nephrologist at Middlesex Hospital and treated patients with kidney disease at numerous dialysis units throughout Connecticut. His dedication to patient care also inspired his support of many causes. He was a proud member of Physicians for Social Responsibility, which received the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize for its work toward nuclear nonproliferation.
Outside of medicine, Dale was an accomplished bridge player who earned Life Master status and advanced beyond it through the American Contract Bridge League. An avid sports fan, he enthusiastically cheered for the Yale Bulldogs, and supported the New York Yankees as a third-generation fan. His ability to recall detailed sport statistics was unmatched. He also joked about how he could have been a professional basketball player if it wasn’t for his bad knee and lack of ability. When not telling bad jokes, Dale loved to travel and visited destinations on every continent with his beloved wife, Sherryll Rowett. Combining his love of travel with his commitment to medicine, he took great pride in caring for dialysis-dependent patients aboard cruise ships through organizations including Cruise Dialysis.
In addition to his wife, Sherryll, Dale is survived by his daughters, Allison Rowett (Chris Sewell) of Cornelius, North Carolina, and Kathryn Rowett Fiander (Tom Fiander) of Shutesbury, Massachusetts, and his step-children Christopher Haak (Kerin Haak) of East Hampton, New York and Abigail Graham (Martin Graham) of London, UK. He is also survived by the grandchildren he lovingly doted on: Maya, Sage, Luna, Lucy, Basil, and Isla. Of all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of the titles of Grampy, Boobah, Dalie or Dale the Whale. His life and memory will be cherished by his family and all who knew him. The family would also like to extend deep gratitude to Kudjo Adu for his unwavering kindness and devotion as Dale’s caregiver.
Services will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Physicians for Social Responsibility at https://secure.everyaction.com/ or Yale School of Medicine Alzheimer's Research Unit at https://medicine.yale.edu/psychiatry/alzheimers/ - two organizations that were deeply important to Dale.
