Joseph J. Hines Jr., 70, of Norwood, PA, passed away peacefully at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park, PA surrounded by his family on January 18, 2024.
Joe was born on February 14, 1953 to Joseph James Hines, Sr. and Florence "Minnie" (Stuski). Growing up, Joe spent his winters in Miami, FL and his summers in Wildwood, NJ at his grandfather’s hotel. Later, he moved to NE Philadelphia with his mother and sisters.
Joe enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a Private in May of 1971 and was promoted to Lance Corporal one year later. He maintained that rank until his Honorable Discharge in February 1973. During his active duty, Joe served a 10-month tour with the 3rd Support Battalion 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam, and received the following commendations: Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Joe was also a life member of VFW Post 5428 where he served on the board.
A loving family man, Joe adored his wife of 18 years, Elaine Kane Hines. He is survived by his beloved children Brittany (Shane), Lauren (Brian), Joseph III (Elizabeth) and stepchildren Laura (Greg) Peterson and John Lynch. Joe actually had a t-shirt that said the two titles he was most proud of were Veteran and Poppy, and he was certainly a proud Poppy to Jayden, Makayla, Lillyanna, Delaney, Madyson, Autumn, Peyton, and Remington. Joe was the brother of Cathy (Thomas) Craig and Maureen (William) Haff. He was preceded in death by both parents and his sister, Colleen Marino. He is also survived by loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and a host of long-time friends.
Joe loved a good story. He led a colorful life and could always be counted on to be there for you even if he was just giving directions or a ride. His ready smile and his quirky sense of humor will definitely be missed.
At the heart of every Funeral Service is remembrance. To that end, Joe’s children have planned a visitation on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 3pm O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Rd. Springfield, PA with a service to follow at 4:30pm.
In light of Joe’s long-time connection with his Military Brothers, his wife Elaine would like to welcome you to a Celebration of Joe’s Life from 1 to 5pm on Saturday February 3, 2024 at the Frederick A. Scott American Legion Post #777, 137 Walter St, Crum Lynne, PA 19022, where Military Funeral Honors for Joe will be rendered by The United States Marine Corps at 3:30 PM “PRECISELY”. No matter which you plan to attend, we invite you to come and share your memories and stories.
The family has requested that all flowers be omitted, and that anyone desiring to do so may make a memorial contribution in Joe’s name and memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741, and which would be deeply appreciated by his family.
May Joe's soul rest in peace, and may his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.
