Rolf Schubiger Bertsch

Born on April 15, 1934, in Sirnach, Thurgau, Switzerland, Rolf came into the world as part of the Bertsch spaghetti family—a fact he shared with a proud twinkle in his eye. At a young age, his life took a dramatic turn when his father relocated the family to Concepción, Chile. It was there, that Rolf developed the strong work ethic and sense of responsibility that would define his life. As the son of a baker, he rose early to deliver bread and pastries across the city by bicycle—a humble beginning that shaped a remarkable journey.

As a young man, Rolf joined the local volunteer fire department, not knowing that a house fire would ignite a love story. Amid the ashes, he met Sonia Hormazabal, who would become his beloved wife and lifelong partner. Together, they raised three children—Rolf Bernhard, Kurt Ernst, and Erika—instilling in them the same values of hard work, integrity, and curiosity that guided his life.

Fueling his desire for new opportunities, Rolf brought his young family to the United States, first settling in Southern California before making their permanent home in Hialeah, Florida. There, Rolf spent over six decades building a life rooted in love, dedication, and service. He worked first as a bus mechanic, later joining the airline industry, where he handled passenger baggage—a position that opened the world to him and his family through affordable travel benefits.

Retirement did not slow Rolf down. He and Sonia became avid cruise travelers, combining their love of the open seas with their airline privileges. From the Mediterranean to Northern Europe and his beloved South America, Rolf embraced each new port with wonder and joy.

But of all his journeys, the one he treasured most was his time spent as a grandfather. Known affectionately as “Abuelito” and “Popcorn,” Rolf delighted in babysitting his grandchildren and cheering them on in every milestone.

Rolf is survived by his loving wife Sonia; his children Rolf, Kurt, and Erika; and his four grandchildren—Riley, Alexa, Zackary, and Oliver—who will forever remember his warmth, generosity, and the adventurous spark that never dimmed.

Rolf’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and quiet heroism. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with hearts full of love and gratitude.
