Born September 27, 1934 in Honolulu, Hawai’i to Fred and Oinah Hundhammer, Fred attended Punahou School and graduated in 1952 with honors. He then attended the University of California, Berkeley, was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Finance and Economis.
After college, Fred served honorably in the US Navy from 1956 to 1964. He was stationed in San Diego, California, where he met the love of his life, Joan Boyd. The two were married on August 21, 1957 at his family home in Aina Haina, Hawai’i. True life partners, Fred and Joan lived and raised their family in Hawai’i and California, then moved to New York and finally retired in Florida. Their shared interests included boating, travel and the theater.
Fred built a career as a stock broker for Hambrecht & Quist in San Francisco before transferring to the New York City office in the mid-eighties. Fred and Joan bought their phone-answering business and developed and ran it successfully until 1996.
Fred and Joan bought and retrofitted their beloved 44-foot Hatteras, the Leslie Lynne, and cruised down the Intercostal Waterway from New York to Florida. They ducked a hurricane and took refuge with friends at the Harbour Cay Club in Marathon, Florida. Twenty years later, they were still there – living aboard their boat – until it was lost in Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Fred was devoted to the Marathon Community Theater where he acted in, and directed, several productions including “Guys and Dolls." Both he and Joan inspired many in the theater community with their passion, insight and humor.
Many stories will be remembered by friends and family, but overwhelmingly, Fred will be remembered for his kindness of heart, ingenuity of mind, and generous spirit.
Fred is predeceased by his parents, Fred and Oinah Hundhammer, and his brother, John Hundhammer.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Joan Hundhammer; his sons Paul (Linda) Hundhammer and Mark (fiance Sarah) Hundhammer; his sister Demetra (Sam) Reynolds and brother Thomas (Kathy) Hundhammer; grandchildren Matthew, Leslie and Lynne; great-grandchildren Junia and Florence; and special pup, Sara.
Fred and his family will always be grateful to his caretakers, Cira Marquez and Sabrina Lewis, for their many years of compassion and support.
In honor of Fred Hundhammer, and in lieu of gifts or flowers, please make donations to the Marathon Community Theater Inc., 5101 Overseas Highway, Marathon, Florida 33050. Per Fred’s wishes, the family will hold a private farewell at sea.
