Roland Haight and I met in March 1966 when we were roommates while attending the Army Rotary-Wing Flight School--Helicopters--at Fort Wolters, Texas. We graduated from flight school together in January 1967. We packed our meager belongings into Roland's yellow 1958 Corvette. We drove across the United States from Fort Rucker, Alabama, first to my home in San Francisco, and then Roland drove to his home in Washington. On February 9, 1967, we gathered again in California, and almost 150 of the 195 flight school classmates boarded a plane for combat in the Vietnam War. Roland distinguished himself during two tours in combat, followed by more years as a pilot for Air America. He is an unheralded hero and a great friend to me. He will be missed, and his service to our country should never be overlooked. The world is a lesser place without my old friend Roland.

Roland will be so missed by his family and very many friends.
