Kim David Fernandes was born in London, England on April 7, 1945, a month before VE Day. His mother, an American World War II widow of an RAF pilot, worked for the American Red Cross. They returned to the US in November 1945 and eventually settled in West Babylon, New York where his mom's family had lived for generations. Kim attended West Babylon schools and Norwich University in Vermont before joining the US Army Special Forces. He served in Vietnam and Bolivia and taught at the School of the Americas in Panama.
After completing his service, Kim became a computer programmer and worked in New York City.
Kim married Irene Lynam in 1973 and in 1976 they moved to Bellevue, Washington where their son David was born in 1982. Kim worked at Safeco Insurance as a programmer and retired in 2001.
In his retirement, Kim enjoyed taking classes at Bellevue College and pursued his interest in short wave radio. He also had an interest in astronomy and often went out to look at the night sky before going to bed. Kim had a lifetime love of music and played the banjo and guitar. He and Irene enjoyed hiking in the beautiful PNW, walking along the seawall in West Seattle on Saturday mornings while stopping at Top Pot Donuts on Alki, taking cruises, especially to Alaska, Hawaii and the South Pacific, and visiting family on the East Coast.
Kim is survived by his wife Irene, his son David and his mom who he lovingly referred to as "Sam" and a large extended family.
Interment will be held at a later date.
