Barbara, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on April 20, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio, Barbara lived a life defined by kindness, creativity, devotion to family, and a genuine love for others.
Barbara graduated from Miami University of Ohio and later earned her MBA from the University of Connecticut. Throughout her career, she shared her knowledge and enthusiasm as both a teacher and a Realtor. She had a special gift for connecting with people and making everyone feel welcome. This gift inspired her to help found the New Neighbors Chapter in Gig Harbor, Washington, where she embraced the belief that you have to “bloom where you are planted.”
Barbara had many interests, including boating, gardening, cooking, sewing, and, above all, spending time with family. An incredibly creative person, she delighted in making elaborate Halloween costumes and creating special memories with those she loved. Whether swimming in the Trilogy pool, preparing her special soups, or playing Chicken Foot with her children and grandchildren, she found joy in the simple moments that brought everyone together. Sprite Island Yacht Club and Holden Beach, North Carolina, always held a special place in her heart.
Family traditions were especially important to Barb. From pasta dinners to game nights filled with laughter, she made togetherness a priority. She never missed an opportunity to cheer on her family at sporting events or celebrate their milestones, always offering unwavering support, encouragement, and love.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Penn Burrows, Jr., and Dorothy McLain Burrows; her stepmother, Rae Nell Burrows; her aunt, Dr. Elizabeth A. Burrows; her brother, Robert Penn Burrows III; her daughter, Catherine Ushka; and her beloved husband, Michael J. Ushka.

Her four children: Kim Gammon and her husband, John; John Mason and his wife, Cynthia; David Ushka and his wife, Amber; and Michael Ushka. She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren and great-grandson: Abbie Scamuffo, her husband, Matt, and their son, Luke; Ashley Gammon; Libby and Jeb Mason; and Alex, Ben his wife, Brooke, Nick, Isaac, Amelia, Gus, Michael, and Rachel Ushka. She will also be dearly missed by many extended family members and friends.
Barbara’s greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, generosity, creativity, and unwavering support that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her warmth, laughter, and caring spirit will be remembered always.
We find comfort in knowing that she is free and happily dancing her way through Heaven.
