On February 2, 2025, Sandra “Sandy” Horton, 83, of Madison, Indiana, passed away peacefully after a losing battle with Alzheimer’s at the River Terrace Health Campus in Madison. Her sons and daughter-in-law were with her.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents William Elmer Henry and Ulla Etness Henry (Akers), her son Eric W. Horton, her brothers William Elmer Jr, Don Edward, Charles Joseph, and Russell David, and her sisters Virginia L. Wise, Dorothy M. Dean, Shirley J. Patton (Hammonds) and Lois L. Simpson (Warren).
Sandy is survived by her sons Charles S. Horton Jr (Jenna) and Carter L. Horton of Madison, her sister Jeanetta M. Webb of North Vernon, and many nieces and nephews.
Sandy grew up in North Vernon, then moved to Madison, and raised her three boys there. She was a loving and attentive mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and mother-in-law. As the youngest daughter of her large family, with several older sisters and brothers and with all of their children, the Henry family reunions were big, fun, and awesome. Sandy’s family (with 6 living generations) was even featured on the 80’s reality TV show “That’s Incredible!”
Sandy was an energetic, honest, and loyal worker. Her work ethic often found her promoted to management in all the jobs she had in Madison. After her teenage son committed suicide, she moved to Indianapolis where she was drawn to help those with mental health issues. She found her calling at Central State Hospital where she quickly became a Certified Medical Assistant. She loved taking care of those in need at Central until its closure in 1994. Sandy wanted to continue helping others and became a Nursing Assistant at Wishard Memorial Hospital until 2001. At the end of her working career and during her retirement, Sandy continued her support of others by working for two Elder Care services. She was a caregiver for elderly clients, and had lasting, close relationships with her many friends and neighbors. Sandy’s big heart extended to several happy cats and dogs over the years, and too short a time ago she enjoyed walking her dogs Tuffy and Zadie around the friendly Speedway neighborhood where she lived for 30+ years.
Though Sandy did not graduate High School, she was passionate about continuing her education in her adult years. She obtained her GED after her kids were grown and took college classes in Indianapolis. She most enjoyed American History, Poetry, Art, and Business classes. Later, she tried to start her own Vending Machine business, but was unsuccessful mostly due to very high physical demands, and all the good places for her vending machines were already taken. Nevertheless, she believed in herself and studied hard to become a successful certified Handwriting Analyst (Graphoanalysis; read about it at igas.com) and was very popular at social gatherings and with family and friends curious about her handwriting analysis skills.
She is greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sandy’s family wishes to give a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful attending doctor, the nurses, aides, and staff (and her many resident friends of the 2nd floor) of the River Terrace Health Campus in Madison and Our Hospice of South Central Indiana’s nurses and aides.
