

Gerald John Stasko, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and widely respected music educator, passed away on June 17, 2025, at age 89. Born on Dec. 3, 1935, in Center Township, Pennsylvania, “Jerry” dedicated his life to music education, inspiring countless students over his long career.
He served in the California National Guard from 1954 to 1959, where he played trombone and baritone in the California National Guard Band. He earned his music degree from San Jose State University in 1957, where he also served as drum major of the university’s marching band.
From 1958 to 1971, Gerald shaped the music program at Livermore High School, directing the band, teaching choir, and serving as musical director for school musicals. In 1962, he founded the Solo and Ensemble Music Festival, an event that has provided performance opportunities for young musicians for over six decades.
In 1978, he authored a beginning band method book titled Da Capo, which was adopted across the district and used for many years. From 1979 to 1990, he served as District Music Coordinator, supporting and mentoring music educators throughout the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District.
He continued his impactful career by teaching at Mendenhall, East Avenue, and Junction Middle Schools, as well as various elementary schools, before retiring in 1993 after 35 years of service.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lynn; daughters Kristina Stasko Woodward, Karla Stasko Morelli, and Karen Stasko Veca; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on through the many students, colleagues, and family members whose lives he enriched.

A celebration of life will be held on Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 522 S. L Street, Livermore. All are welcome.
