

As an adult, best known as Wayne, he left the small town of his birth to begin a 21 year military career in the US Army in July 1962. He attended the US Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Ca and completed a series of three immersive language courses ending with Advanced Russian. As a member of the U.S. Army Security Agency, he was certified as a Professional Language Analyst and Voice Language Analyst in the National Security Agency, Central Security Service.
While stationed at Fort Meade in 1965 he met and married his wife of 59 years, Nora. In 1966, while they were stationed in West Berlin, Germany, their daughter Cheryl was born.
Wayne retired from military service as Chief Warrant Officer 3 in 1983. He was recruited by GTE in Mountain View, Ca. He and wife and daughter returned to an area of California they knew and loved. Over the years Wayne worked as Systems Engineering Manager for other defense and research companies.
In 2018 Wayne and Nora moved to the Stoneridge Creek Retirement Community, SRC, in Pleasanton, CA. They enjoyed seven years together among interesting and talented fellow residents in a beautiful, serene setting.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Nora, daughter Cheryl (Matthew) Walterskirchen, granddaughter Josephine, brother Richard, and sisters Rhonda and Joy.
In expressing their condolences, many, many friends and acquaintances have commented on his gentle kindness, happy demeanor and dry wit. He was a devoted husband and father and a good man.
Wayne will be interred at California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, near Fort Ord,Ca.
He will always be in our hearts.
