the gates of heaven Friday, July 21st, 2023. William was born in Chicago, Illinois on December
4th, 1940.
William, affectionately known as Bill by his family, many friends, and all he met. Bill was a kind
and gentle man with an infectious smile and kind words for everyone. Bill graduated high
school and entered the Navy to serve his country on a submarine stationed in Pearl Harbor,
Oahu, Hawaii, going back and forth to Tokyo during his service. Following completion of his
service in the Navy, Bill attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, receiving a Bachelor’s
degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by two Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering and
Engineering Administration. This led to his 35+ year career with Caterpillar Tractor Company,
leading him to a wonderful retirement he enjoyed very much.
Bill was active throughout his life in volunteer service to his church, community, and always
helping those in need.
William was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife, Norma Jean Ray August 7th, 2020.
Bill is survived by his children, Christine Gillies and husband Stephen, Scott Ray and his wife
Stacey, and grandchildren, Nate Gillies, Jessica Gillies, Brenna Ray, and Hayden Ray and his
wife Alex.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations be made in William Ray’s Memory to Arkansas Hospice (link below) where Bill spent his final days being cared for by an amazing group of angels on this earth who we cannot thank enough for their tender care.
