Alfredo Borda Martelo, 84, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family in La Marque, TX on September 23rd, 2023. Alfredo lost his decade-long battle to Alzheimer’s disease. He was born on August 10, 1939, to Olimpia and Carlos Borda in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Alfredo, a loving and devoted husband and father, is survived by his wife, Elena, daughter, Elizabeth, and loving dogs, Daisy and Lily. He had one brother, Carlos (preceded in death), sister-in-law, Carmen, and six nephews, Carlos, Alfredo, Pedro, Fabian (preceded in death), Camilo and Jorge.
After immigrating to the United States via Miami, Florida at the age of 17, he moved to New York City to pursue his studies in psychology. He completed his Bachelor of Science from the State University of New York Empire State College and Master of Science from the New School for Social Research, while working as a bilingual psychological evaluator for the anti-juvenile delinquency program, Mobilization for Youth. Alfredo worked as an industrial psychologist for the National Railroad of Mexico in the 80s and for the Catholic Charities Behavioral Health Center Clinics until retirement.
It was at Mobilization for Youth that Alfredo met the love of his life, Elena, whom he affectionately called “Pit”, who stood by his side through thick and thin; he in turn would do the same for her during her time of need throughout their 50 years of marriage together.
Alfredo loved sweets, enjoyed walking and spending time near the ocean. He was an avid reader and lifelong student of spirituality, world religions, meditation, and virtue through practice.
Alfredo was a quiet and private man, but he had a wonderful sense of humor, was warm hearted and loved helping people, young and old. Alfredo was gentle with a big heart, whose impact will be forever felt by his family that love him dearly. He was a selfless man whose passing is leaving an unfillable gap in the hearts of his loved ones. His ability to sacrifice, provide, support, forgive, and love will be forever engrained in all he knew.
Alfredo’s final request was cremation, where he will be honored by scattering his ashes at sea.
