Sylvester is the devoted and loving husband of his wife Saundra Nance who he affectionately calls Sandy, and they have been married for 44 years. He was and will always be a beloved father and grandfather to his seven children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sylvester was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 9, 1938 to Hattie Bell and Sylvester Nance, Sr. After several years in Memphis Tennessee, Sylvester and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois where Sylvester remained until graduating from high school. Sylvester was an active member of his church and loved the Lord.
Sylvester joined the United States Navy immediately after completing high school. During his time of service, Sylvester worked in military aviation and served honorably in combat during the Vietnam War. He rose to the distinctive position of Senior Chief Petty Officer during his time in the United States Navy. Sylvester retired with an honorable discharge after 20 years of service to our country. After his military service, Sylvester went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business from California State University Northridge. During his civilian service he was instrumental in the creation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He was a well-respected business owner of an auto mechanic shop in Sylmar, California for many years. Sylvester loved sports, especially football, basketball and golf. He was an avid golfer, and very good at the game. Sylvester was also a pilot, having earned his pilot’s license in his early years and enjoyed flying small recreational aircrafts. Sylvester was a warm, friendly and loving man who was endeared by many.
Sylvester will always be cherished by his family, leaving many to remember him including his loving and faithful wife Saundra Nance, brother Daniel Douglas (Geneva), son Ricky Nance-Dalton (Darlene), daughter Sylvia A. Thomas, son Robert Bryan Nance (Regina), daughter Brenda R. Nance, daughter Catherine M. Nance, son Torrence Ammons, 20 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother Hattie Bell, father Sylvester Nance, Sr. son Ronald D. Nance and son-in-law Garry Thomas.
We love you eternally Sylvester, and your family will always have you in our hearts.
