Rex Allen Powell, age 75, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2023 at home of natural causes. He was born February 8, 1948 in Seattle, WA to Lavon and Beulah Powell (Crist). He married Mary Yannutz February 14, 2006 in Las Vegas, NV.
Rex loved life and spent much of it caring and doing for other. He always enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, biking, hiking, and metal detecting. Rex graduated from Arvada High School, went on to Kansas State in Hayes, KS, and earned a BA in Fine Arts. In 1970 he joined the U.S. Navy as a nuclear machinist mate. After an honorable discharge, he attained an MBA at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO. In his early career, he was an Illustrator at the Department of Commerce National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in Boulder, CO. Later he worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) as a Facilities Manager. After Rex’s retirement in 1996, he lived in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and Germany, extensively traveling in the western US and Europe. In 2002, he moved to Mesquite hoping to enjoy the warmer weather in winter. Rex was a longtime member of the Elks, Eagles, and American Legion and was an active member of the Mesquite Honor Guard. His hobbies included oil painting, landscaping, woodworking, cooking, rock hounding, and reading.
He is survived by his spouse, Mary, his three children, Babil, Jesse, and Jonathan, his four step-children, four siblings, and ten beloved grandchildren.
Rex’s patience and devotion towards others will always be remembered. He was able to bring people together: during his career with NBS and NOAA, with his commitment to the Powell family reunions, and then with his presence in the Sandstone community as a leader and a teacher.
Rex was a prolific artist, commended veteran, and proud American. Mostly he was a wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend. Rex’s absence has created a void with everyone who met him. He will be very fondly remembered and truly missed.
