Mary was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 18, 1944 to Harold and Mary (O’Neil) Quitter. Mary grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and attended Elementary schools, Junior High School and graduated in 1962 from Washington High School. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and was baptized and took Catechism there. After graduating from High School, Mary continued on to complete 4 years of college education in Missouri, graduating with a Degree in Studies in Learning Disabilities and continued learning for her Master’s Degree, in that field.
Mary became a teacher in Denver, Colorado for seven years. She taught primary grades. She loved “other people’s” children but never had children of her own. After teaching for 7 years and sick of the snow in Denver, she traveled with her husband and they moved to Phoenix and also lived in the Gulf Coast of Texas. Lonesome for a home of her own, they moved to Boulder City, Nevada and enjoyed their boat, water skiing and golfing. She even opened a restaurant of her own at Lake Mead and fed many kids. She gave up the restaurant and they moved to Las Vegas and she worked at a Strip Hotel & Casino in Sales and Marketing for five years, booking groups in from all over the world. This job got her involved in real estate and land acquisition, property management and sales, becoming one of the top producers in realty sales in Las Vegas in Venture Realty Group. Mary was a Relocation Specialist and a Multi-Million Dollar Producer in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mary was retired and divorced. She enjoyed traveling extensively through Europe – 7 times; Mexico and Hawaii several times. Mary loved people, she never met a stranger and especially loved her friends and their children were also “her own”, so she claimed. She never missed the opportunity to take her friends out to the casinos, to “win their fortunes”, or treat them to fine dining, in one of her favorite restaurants, or hosting them into the “Sin City of the World”. The other loves in her life were her “doggies”, several of them, the last Bichon being Bubbles. She adored and cherished each and every one of them.
Mary is survived by a nephew Mathew Quitter, London, England. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mary (O'Neil) Quitter and her only sibling, a brother, John “Jack” Quitter, London, England.
Mary requested that her ashes be spread at her “Happy Place” in South Dakota which will be a private ceremony. A “Remembrance Ceremony” is being planned for 2022 in conjunction with the Class of 62’s 60th Class Reunion (if there is one), in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for those classmates, who wish to “Remember Quitter”, with their stories, thoughts and friendships of Mary. Mary will always be in our hearts and memories and she will be sorely missed by many. Rest in Peace Mary.
