Janet Sue Savalli, a loved and cherished woman known for her caring, humorous, loving and bold personality, left us on September 1, 2024. Born April 9, 1933, Janet lived a life filled with a great friendship and passion for others.
She is survived by her niece Samantha Savalli, grandnieces Savanah Lowy and Shiva Lowy and grandnephew JT Poulos, her great, great niece and nephew, Estelle Elliot-Lowy and Noah Poulos and her many friends who were also her family. All our lives were greatly enriched by knowing and loving Jan. She was special to each as evidenced by her many monikers, Jan, Sue, Janet Sue, Aunt Jan, Aunt Janet, Auntie Sue and Nene.
Jan retired with 50 years of service from the phone company, aka, Southern Nevada Telephone, Central Telephone, Centel and finally Sprint. She was the spirit of the company and was known and hugged by Janitors and Company Presidents alike. She started as long distance operator (referred to by Howard Hughes as my operator), was Toll Investigator and finally the Community Relations Coordinator, where she developed a relationship with the Independent Telephone Pioneers Association. In this capacity she was able to mix her love of people and shopping by creating and operating a company store that donated over $50,000 a year to the community.
Jan had many commendable accomplishments including being a founding member and long-time steward of IBEW at the phone company. One of her most prized accomplishments was being a part of the Centel Singers. She was not only a charter member, but she was the Sparkly Master of Ceremonies for the group who played over 3,800 engagements around Southern Nevada, including opening the D gates at the airport with Siegfried and Roy.
Her other loves were travelling, friends and family. She visited over 30 countries and every continent except Asia. She always said helping to raise Savannah and Shiva was her Asia. Jan was a social butterfly and loved friends, new and old. She annually hosted her “Bozo” parties and enjoyed getting together with her “gals”. Her bright personality and demand for a hug, from old friends and new, including doctors, will be part of her legacy.
Janet Sue Savalli was a force, and she should be appreciated by young women today, as during the time when women had no voice, she stood up to the powers that be and was not afraid to be the voice and lead the way, often to her own detriment. She will forever reside in our hearts and inspire us.
Please join us for a Celebration of Life for Janet, Jan, Sue and Nene at Dona Maria’s 3205 North Tenaya on Sunday, September 22nd from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers please donate to Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada and/or Safe Nest.
